Mangosteen, the Queen of Fruits Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) belongs to the family Clusiaceae, is a tropical tree from India, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. This tree can reach 6 to 25m, has got a leathery appearance, grows slowly and its leaves are ‘limp’. The Mangosteen fruit is dark purple or reddish, with a juicy edible pulp with a slightly sweet-sour taste and a pleasant aroma, which is why it is known as ‘the queen of fruits‘. Garcinia mangostana has got a long history of use in traditional herbology, mainly in Southeast Asia, especially in Ayurvedic herbology. The main constituents are Xanthones, with over 60 types and antioxidant properties. The main Xanthones in Mangosteen are: α-mangostin, γ-mangostin, β-mangostin, garcinone B, mangostanol, mangostanin and mangostinone. Due to its special flavour and aroma there is an endless number of recipes that can be made, such as a delicious mangosteen jam with coconut sugar that can be prepared with Mangosteen pulp, apple pectin, coconut sugar, lemon juice and water.
